At SGA Electric, we believe there is always more to learn, whether it’s about the National Electrical Code, new developments in the electrical industry, or simply finding better ways to operate our business and serve our customers. Continuing education is an important part of staying sharp in this industry, which is why we recently traveled to Orlando, Florida, to attend an intensive three-day seminar with Mike Holt.

Mike Holt is one of the most recognized names in electrical education, particularly when it comes to understanding and applying the National Electrical Code (NEC). The three-day event brought together electrical professionals from around the country and combined an electrical contractor Business Symposium with two days of in-depth NEC review and training.

The Business Symposium focused on something that is sometimes overlooked in the electrical trade: being a good electrician and running a good electrical contracting company are two different skill sets. The discussions covered ways contractors can improve their operations, develop their teams, communicate better with customers, manage projects more effectively, and build a company that provides a consistently professional experience from the first phone call through completion of the job.

A major portion of the seminar was also dedicated to reviewing and better understanding the National Electrical Code. Electrical codes continue to evolve as technology changes and the industry develops better ways to protect people and property from electrical hazards. The training went beyond simply looking up code requirements and focused on understanding the reasoning behind the rules and how those requirements apply to real-world electrical installations.

Taking several days away from the normal day-to-day operation of the company is a significant investment, but we believe continuing education like this is worth it. The knowledge and ideas we bring home can be applied directly to how we troubleshoot problems, plan installations, manage projects, communicate with customers, and make decisions in the field.

For our customers, that means working with an electrical contractor that is committed to continuing to learn and improve. Whether we’re performing an electrical service upgrade, troubleshooting an electrical problem, installing a standby generator, or completing a larger residential or commercial project, our goal is to provide work that is safe, professional, code-compliant, and completed with attention to detail.

We enjoyed the opportunity to spend three days learning from Mike Holt and other electrical professionals in Orlando, and we returned home with new ideas and knowledge that we can put to work at SGA Electric. The electrical industry never stops changing, and we plan to continue investing in training and education so we can keep improving the service we provide to our customers throughout Eastern North Carolina.
